What is a Spiritual Mentor?
As guide and companion to another on his or her journey to holiness, a Spiritual Mentor is someone guided by the Holy Spirit in strictly following the teachings of the Church while teaching and supporting the mentee in spiritual matters. Jesus walked the journey with His disciples, He didn't call them to a great life with Him and then leave them alone. Spiritual Mentors are here to accompany others on this walk with Christ, to hold their mentees accountable, and challenge them to go deeper.
What does a Spiritual Mentor do?
A Spiritual Mentor is one formed to:
Help the mentee establish a habit of daily prayer with a resolution.
Teach the mentee how to prepare to receive the sacraments and the importance of thanksgiving after receiving the sacraments.
Teach the mentee the steps of how to make prudent decisions.
Help the mentee grow in virtue.
Help the mentee formulate a Rule or Plan of Life.
Support the mentee in his or her state of life and vocation.
Pray for the mentee.
Allow the Holy Spirit to be the prime director in the relationship with the mentee.
Hold the mentee accountable.
Maintain confidentiality with regard to the mentee.
Spiritual Mentorship is not:
Grief or marriage counseling - In which a person seeks psychological help for a situation that he or she is experiencing.
Psychotherapy - In which one seeks a cure for the resolution of a psychic conflict and the professional is responsible for the cure of the patient.
Confession - Confession is a sacrament administered only by a priest.
Offer mentoring to persons of the opposite gender.
Offer spiritual mentorship to a minor.
Who should have a Spiritual Mentor?
We recommend everyone have a Spiritual Mentor! It is an incredible opportunity to be challenged and accompanied in the Christian life, which can sometimes be difficult. The Holy Family School of Faith has set a minimum age of 18 years old.
